Satellite-to-phone connectivity is already available for some Australian customers. A compatible handset can exchange messages beyond terrestrial mobile coverage, subject to the service, plan, location and a clear view of the sky.1
Direct-to-device satellite—often shortened to D2D—can add a useful communication option on remote roads, farms and other places beyond mobile coverage. It also prompts an obvious question: if a satellite can talk to a phone, will homes and businesses still need fibre, fixed wireless or Wi-Fi?
The short answer is yes. These technologies work at different layers, with different strengths and constraints. Satellite-to-phone is better understood as another tool in the connectivity kit than a universal replacement.
What satellite-to-phone changes
Traditional satellite services often use a purpose-built dish or terminal. D2D aims to connect compatible satellites with mobile devices more directly, using an antenna that fits in your pocket rather than on a roof.
That is technically demanding. A phone has limited transmit power and a small antenna. The satellite is far away and moving relative to the user. Buildings, terrain, foliage and even the ability to see enough sky can affect the radio path. Available spectrum and shared satellite capacity also have to be managed.
As a result, “satellite-to-phone” should not be treated as one fixed product specification. Services may differ in device support, geography, messaging or data capability, availability, capacity and whether a clear view of the sky is required. Check current capabilities and compatibility directly with the provider before relying on a service.
For example, Telstra currently describes satellite messaging and access to selected satellite apps for eligible customers. These are limited, provider-defined services: they do not turn a handset into an unrestricted fixed-broadband connection.1
Fibre: high-capacity connectivity to a fixed place
Fibre uses light through a physical cable. Where it is available and correctly designed, it is well suited to carrying large volumes of traffic to a home, office, building or data centre.
That fixed connection can support many people and devices at once: video meetings, cloud applications, streaming, off-site backups and software downloads. Fibre can also be upgraded over time by changing equipment, although the exact speeds and service characteristics always depend on the network, provider, plan and location.
Its limitation is also obvious: fibre has to be built to the place that needs it. It does not follow a person along a remote track. Installation can require civil works, building pathways and permissions.
D2D and fibre therefore answer different questions:
- Fibre asks, “How do we deliver substantial capacity to this known location?”
- D2D asks, “Can this mobile device retain some connectivity where terrestrial coverage is unavailable?”
For many users, those capabilities are complementary.
Fixed wireless: a terrestrial link without the last cable
Fixed wireless connects a premises by radio to terrestrial network infrastructure. An outdoor or suitably placed unit can use a planned link rather than relying on a pocket-sized handset inside a building.
That can make fixed wireless a practical primary service, an alternative where fibre construction is difficult, or a secondary path for resilience. Performance depends on the specific network design, spectrum, capacity, interference, equipment and site conditions. Line of sight or near-line-of-sight may matter for some systems.
Compared with D2D, the terrestrial site is much closer and customer equipment can be larger, powered and carefully positioned. That creates a very different link budget and capacity model. A satellite connection that is useful for a text message in the bush is not automatically a substitute for an office full of cloud users.

Wi-Fi: the local link people often confuse with internet access
Wi-Fi usually connects your phone, laptop or television to a local router or access point. The router then connects to the wider internet over fibre, fixed wireless, mobile or another access service.
This distinction explains why D2D is unlikely to make Wi-Fi redundant. Wi-Fi efficiently serves many devices across a home, office or venue without requiring each one to maintain its own wide-area connection. It also supports local traffic, such as printing or moving data between devices, even though internet-dependent applications still need an upstream service.
If streaming buffers in one bedroom but works beside the router, replacing the external access service may not solve the problem. The likely issue is coverage, interference, router placement or local network capacity. Conversely, perfect Wi-Fi cannot compensate for an inadequate or failed upstream service.
A useful diagnosis separates three links:
- device to Wi-Fi access point;
- local network to the internet service;
- provider network to the destination application.
D2D introduces another possible wide-area path, but it does not collapse all three into one.
Where D2D may be genuinely valuable
Its strongest use cases are likely to be those where some connectivity is much better than none.
Staying in touch beyond mobile coverage
A supported messaging service can help people exchange ordinary updates when away from terrestrial coverage. Check its limits carefully: Telstra states that its satellite services are not emergency services and cannot be used to call Triple Zero or text Triple Zero directly. Do not substitute ordinary satellite messaging for a suitable emergency communication plan.1
Broad-area field operations
Utilities, agriculture, logistics and environmental teams may value a fallback channel for staff or low-volume workflows. Before depending on it, an organisation should test coverage assumptions, device behaviour, security, application requirements and escalation procedures in the actual field environment.
Disaster resilience
A space-based path may remain available when some ground infrastructure is damaged. However, resilience should never be assumed from a technology label. Power, satellite capacity, gateways, the wider internet, device charge and obstruction can still affect service. A continuity plan needs testing and multiple failure scenarios.
A simple decision guide
Choose by job, not novelty.
For a high-use home or office: start with an appropriate fixed service, then design Ethernet and Wi-Fi to distribute it.
For a site where trenching fibre is impractical: assess fixed wireless and other available fixed-access options against capacity and reliability needs.
For a person moving outside terrestrial coverage: assess D2D as an additional communication option, checking the provider’s current service details.
For business continuity: consider technologies with genuinely different failure paths. Confirm whether two services share power, ducts, towers, backhaul or upstream infrastructure.
Ask these questions before relying on any connection:
- What applications must work, and with how much data?
- Is the user stationary, mobile, indoors or outdoors?
- What latency and upload performance are acceptable?
- How many users share the service?
- What equipment, power and sky or terrestrial visibility are required?
- What happens when the primary path fails?
- Has the fallback been tested at the real site?
The likely future is layered
Connectivity is rarely a winner-takes-all market. Fibre can provide a high-capacity foundation, fixed wireless can reach premises by terrestrial radio, Wi-Fi can connect devices locally, and D2D can extend a mobile communication option into places traditional coverage does not reach.
