When residents raise internet complaints, the conversation often starts with faster plans. For a body corporate, the more useful starting point is the building itself.

What infrastructure serves the property? How does the connection reach each apartment? And what would an upgrade actually involve?

A good proposal should make those questions easy to answer.

Start with the existing network

“Fibre-connected” can describe different arrangements. Fibre may reach a communications room, with another type of cabling completing the connection to individual apartments. In other buildings, fibre runs into each residence.

Ask for a clear diagram showing the current arrangement and the proposed change. Separate the building’s network infrastructure from the Wi-Fi equipment residents use inside their homes.

Understand the installation

Before considering headline speeds, ask the provider to explain:

  • Where new equipment and cabling will go.
  • Whether technicians need access to individual apartments.
  • How installation appointments and resident communications will work.
  • What power, space and ongoing access the equipment requires.
  • How penetrations, finishes and installation defects will be addressed.

For example, nbn’s building-upgrade process involves an agreement with the owners’ representatives before delivery. Other proposals should be assessed on their specific process and terms.

Look beyond the installation price

Request a written explanation of upfront costs, ongoing charges, equipment ownership, maintenance responsibilities and agreement duration.

Ask what choices residents will have, whether existing services can continue, and whether participation is optional under the proposed arrangement.

Define the handover

A completed installation should leave the building with useful records: equipment locations, cabling documentation, support contacts and a clear fault-escalation process.

That gives future committees and building managers something dependable to work from.
