An existing fibre connection does not, by itself, answer every question about a building’s future connectivity.

Residents may want another service option. A committee may be investigating recurring performance concerns. A building owner may be planning for more demanding applications.

The first step is to establish what is there—and what alternatives are feasible.

A different provider can mean different things

Changing the company that bills a resident may still leave the service running over the same underlying network.

Installing an additional network is a different project. It can involve new equipment, a separate connection into the building and new cabling to apartments.

The distinction matters when assessing what a proposal would actually change.

What does “overbuilding” mean?

In this context, overbuilding means installing an additional network in a building already served by another network.

It does not automatically mean removing the existing infrastructure or moving every resident. The installation scope, service choices and transition arrangements need to be established for the particular building.

Is another network the right answer?

That depends on the problem.

Poor Wi-Fi inside an apartment may need a local solution. A building-wide infrastructure constraint calls for a broader assessment. Adding another connection also does not automatically create resilience: networks may share physical routes or other dependencies.

A credible proposal should identify the issue, explain how the proposed network addresses it and describe what will remain unchanged.

What should the committee ask?

Start with five questions:

  • What improvement will residents actually receive?
  • What installation work and building access are required?
  • Can existing services remain available?
  • Who owns, maintains and supports the new infrastructure?
  • What costs and commitments apply to the building and individual residents?
