Internet contention means customers or applications share network capacity. Congestion occurs when demand exceeds the capacity available on part of that path. CVC is a wholesale term associated with nbn capacity; it is not another name for every internet slowdown.
What did CVC mean?
Connectivity Virtual Circuit charging formed part of nbn’s wholesale pricing. That pricing has changed: nbn’s 2023 SAU and wholesale agreement announcement described removing CVC charges for the 100Mbps and higher tiers. Older explanations should not be treated as a description of every current plan.
Why network capacity still matters
Changing a wholesale charge does not remove the need to plan network capacity. Your experience also depends on the access connection, provider network, Wi-Fi, equipment and destination service.
What should you compare?
Look at the plan’s relevant performance information, upload capacity, support and service terms. Ask how faults and congestion are investigated. Owning a fibre network gives a provider control over its design; it does not justify a blanket promise that every application will always run without slowdowns.
