Running a traceroute is a great way to diagnose network issues or check the path your data takes to reach a destination. It shows each hop between your computer and the target server, helping you identify where slowdowns or connectivity problems occur.
Here’s how to run a traceroute on both macOS and Windows.
macOS
If you’re using a Mac, follow these steps:
- Open Terminal:
- Press Command + Spacebar to open Spotlight Search.
- Type Terminal and press Enter.
- Run the Traceroute Command:
In the Terminal window, type the following command:
traceroute www.google.com
(Replace www.google.com with the IP address or domain name you want to trace to, for example: traceroute 1.1.1.1)
- Analyse the Output:
- The Terminal will display the route, showing each hop and the time it takes to reach each one (measured in milliseconds). If you see timeouts or significantly high latency at any hop, it may indicate a network issue at that point.
Windows
If you’re using a Windows PC, follow these steps:
- Open Command Prompt:
- Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type cmd and press Enter.
- Run the Traceroute Command:
In the Command Prompt window, type the following command:
traceroute www.google.com
(Replace www.google.com with the IP address or domain name you want to trace to, for example: traceroute 1.1.1.1)
- Analyse the Output:
- The output will display each hop your data passes through, along with the time it takes for each hop.
- If any hop shows asterisks (***) or high latency, it may indicate a connectivity issue at that location.
Tips for Using Traceroute Effectively
- Use an IP Address or Domain Name: Make sure to enter a valid IP address or domain name you want to trace.
- Run Multiple Traceroutes: Network conditions can fluctuate. Running the traceroute several times helps confirm if an issue is persistent.
- Analyse the Results: Look for timeouts (indicated by * * *) or high latency times. This may point to issues with your ISP, the destination server, or any intermediary hops.
